Edward Grood, Ph.D., was one of only three Americans invited to speak at a Japanese national conference. Dr. Grood is the Director of the Noyes-Giannestras Biomechanics Laboratories and a Professor of Applied Mechanics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Cincinnati. He traveled to Yonago City, Japan this October as an invited guest speaker at the Central Japanese Association of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology. Dr. Grood spoke on the biomechanics of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and the research he has performed at the Noyes/Biomechanics Laboratories at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering.

Sunday, October 11th, 1998

David Butler, PhD. traveled to Japan for the 3rd World Congress on Biomechanics. He presented “Accelerating Tendon Repair: Structure-Function Relationships”and “A Multi-disciplinary Approach to Analyzing Tendon Fibrocartilage Mechanics, Structure, and Chemistry.” This Congress brings together 1,500 biomechanical researchers from around the world.

Dr. Noyes recently returned from Brazil, where he spoke, at special invitation, at the Brazilian Meeting on Orthopaedics and Traumatology, the country’s premier orthopaedic meeting. This is the second time Dr. Noyes has been invited to speak in Brazil. Dr. Noyes lectured on ten different topics including advances on treating anterior cruciate ligament posterior cruciate ligament tears, and meniscus transplantation among other topics.

The Women’s Sports Foundation, a national policy-setting group consisting of some of America’s greatest female athletes, has elected Dr. Michelle Andrews to their Board of Trustees. Other members of the board include Billie Jean King, Nancy Lieberman-Cline and Janet Evans. Dr. Andrews represents leadership from the medical community and was chosen for her long history of supporting women sports and fitness. Locally she is a founding board member of the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati Women’s Sports Association.Dr. Michelle Andrews has also been named Program Chair for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Nursing and Allied Health Conference, Year 2000. Attended by thousands of health professionals each year, the program will be held in Orlando, Florida in 1999.

Dr. Noyes was quoted in the October, 1998 issue of Conde Nast Sports and Women magazine. Titled “Building a Better Knee” the article followed a female athlete through her ACL surgery. Dr. Noyes was cited for his understanding of the higher occurrence of knee injuries in female athletes and the current research in that area.

The September issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery published the work of Dr. Mark Siegel and former fellow Marc Rubman, MD. The two collaborated with the National Institute on Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to determine whether the isolation gowns worn by doctors during surgery met recommended CO2 levels. They found that each of the five manufacturer brands tested exceeded the normal CO2 gas level inside the surgical hoods. They hope this study will encourage manufacturers to make safer gowns.
