Dr. Matt Busam recently gave a presentation at the Gamble-Nippert YMCA to help runners “Get to the Next Level”. An avid runner and member of the Flying Pig Wellness Team, Dr. Busam informed those in attendance on good versus bad pain, treating injuries and the latest medical recommendations as a person is preparing for their run, whether it’s a 5K or a full marathon. Dr. Busam sees patients at our Western Hills office and Crestview Hills, KY office.

For more information on good versus bad pain, read the article below Dr. Busam wrote that was in the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Runners: Pay attention to pain As the dark days and cold mornings of winter begin to (hopefully) give way to the warmer temperatures and sunnier skies of spring, thousands of runners dust off their shoes and start their training for the weekend-long celebration of Cincinnati running, the Flying Pig Marathon and its associated races. In the process, we learn that dust might have gathered on more than shoes, and we begin to question just which pains are normal and acceptable and which ones warrant a trip to the specialist. I like to break down pain into three types: good pain, concerning pain and bad pain.

Good pain: This is the pain associated with getting in shape. Some discomfort with hard exertion is expected. General muscles soreness after a hard workout is OK and is almost like a badge of honor for having worked hard. Good pain does not impact our running and goes away before the next workout is scheduled.

Concerning pain: This is pain that persists during the run, but does not hinder it. It might linger after the run, but doesn’t cause swelling or limping. This pain usually means one of two things. We are working a little too hard and need a break to prevent worse injury, or a more serious event has occurred and we’re about to break down. Treat this pain with an extra day off to be sure you’re on the mend before running again. Focus on stretching and crosstraining.

Bad pain: This is pain that affects our running. Swelling or limping might occur and the pain does not go away during the run. If this is the case, stop running. Give yourself at least a few days break. Ice the affected area, cross train for a week. If the pain persists get it checked out.

What is causing my pain? Most pain can be classified into one of two broad categories: Structural or dynamic. Structural pain is when something is torn, broken, arthritic or otherwise damaged. An example is a stress fracture. This pain often needs rest to allow things to heal or possibly surgery to correct the problem. Dynamic pain is much more common in runners. Runner’s knee or ilio-tibial band pain are examples of dynamic pain. This pain comes when the muscles are not strong enough or flexible enough to move the joint correctly during the running cycle. Unfortunately, these pains can cross over and mix. As with most running pains, swelling, limping and worsening performance should all be taken seriously and be evaluated. A running coach, sports medicine specialist, or physical therapist can help determine what is deficient and point you on the right path to get this corrected. All runners need three things to succeed. Endurance, strength and flexibility. When one of these is missing, problems will rise.

The recent publication of Gheiti et al in Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery, April 2012 had the purpose of determining which published articles in the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia had been most frequently cited by other authors. The study was performed by conducting an extensive searching process of 61 orthopedic journals to determine the 25 most cited articles in the specialty of Arthroscopic Orthopaedic Surgery. The distinction of being the most frequently cited Surgeon by other authors was used as a criteria of the importance of the published work of the surgeon.

Of the 25 most cited articles in the World a highly select group of 20 Surgeons had one published article achieving this distinction, one author had two published articles that were cited. This non-profit prorgram has saved hundreds and hundreds of young female athletes from having a serious ACL knee injury and requring surgery and is viewed as a give-back by the Foundation Dr Noyes established (www.sportsmetrics.org).

Dr Noyes provides care for patients at the Noyes Knee Institute which is located at the Cincinnati Sportsmedicne and Orthopedic Center in Montgomery Ohio.

Congratulations to Josh Dooley and Joe Spencer from Mason High School for being selected to play in the Big 33 All-Star Football Classic on June 16. This game pairs the best in Ohio vs. the best in Pennsylvania. Cincinnati SportsMedicine is proud to sponsor these athletes to represent the Greater Cincinnati area for their dedication over the years. “I appreciate everything Cincinnati SportsMedicine has done for me throughout my athletic career,” commented Josh. “Thank you for helping me go on this memorable week long trip and Cincinnati SportsMedicine will always be my recommendation with no hesitation.”

The Big 33 Football Classic has attracted many outstanding athletes. There has never been a Super Bowl without at least one player coming from the Big 33 game. Ben Roethlisberger, an Alumnus of the game, will be this year’s honorable chairman. The game takes place in Hersey, Pennsylvania and will be broadcast on the NFL Network. Brian Castner, Head Coach for Mason High School, will be an assistant coach for Ohio. Good luck Josh, Joe, Coach Castner, and OHIO!
