Dr. Michelle Andrews is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, knee and shoulder problems. She attended medical school at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and traveled for orthopaedic surgery electives at Ranchos los Amigos in Downey California and at the University of California in San Francisco. After medical school, she attended Yale University where she completed her surgical internship and her orthopaedic surgery residency. Dr Andrews was chief resident and clinical instructor in orthopaedics at Yale and was awarded the Don Joy Award for the research she conducted on muscle fatigue. Dr Andrews completed a two-year combined clinical-research sports medicine fellowship at Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. She was selected to be a Sports Ethics Fellow on the Panel on Sports Ethics by the Institute for International Sports in Princeton, NJ.
Dr Andrews joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD as Assistant Professor in orthopaedic surgery. She was Assistant Director of the Sports Medicine Section at Johns Hopkins and was actively involved in developing the Johns Hopkins sports medicine fellowship program. Dr Andrews has the distinction for being the first-ever female orthopaedic surgeon to be a team physician for a major league baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. Featured in USA Today, The Washington Post, and several regional publications, Dr Andrews received national attention for her coverage of the Orioles. She was also team physician for the Johns Hopkins University teams and Bryn Mawr High School in Baltimore. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr Andrews was the director of a regional conference “The Unique Attributes of the Female Athlete”. While in Baltimore, Dr Andrews served on a number of committees including the Johns Hopkins Resident Education Committee and the Board of Directors for the Maryland Special Olympics.
Dr Andrews has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented her research at national orthopaedic meeting and conferences. She has participated on national panels for the US Olympics Special Committee for Female Athletes and served on the American College of Sports Medicine Continuing Medical Education Committee. Dr Andrews has presented multiple orthopaedic topics to national organizations including the Women’s Sports Foundation, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery annual meeting, the Northern California Chapter of the Western Orthopaedic Association, the Ohio Department of Health-Office of Women’s Health Initiatives and the Arthritis Foundation, sharing her expertise in sports medicine. Dr Andrews served as the course chairman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Nursing and Allied Health Program in Orlando, Fl. She served as program director for The Forum – Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained Conference on “Bone Health” in Scottsdale, AZ, and was a Panel Moderator for the Women’s Sports Foundation Summit on “Women’s Health Issues Related to Exercise”. For two years, she spearheaded “Building on the Basics” an instructional course for primary care physicians in Cincinnati. Dr Andrews has taught resident physicians and allied health professionals from Christ Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, Jewish Hospital, St Elizabeth Hospital, Tri-Health and University of Cincinnati and was honored with the Outpatient Family Medicine Teacher Award.
Dr Andrews served on the Board of Trustees for the Women’s Sports Foundation, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and locally on the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky Sports Association. She was on the steering committee of the 1997 Women’s Basketball Final Four in Cincinnati. She served as a Councilor for the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati. While involved with the Academy, Dr Andrews served on the “School Partnership Committee”, the “Women in Medicine” Committee and the “Electronic Communications and Computer Expo” Committee. She also served on the Tri-Health Sports Medicine Committee and on the Deaconess Hospital Medical Executive Committee and was Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Deaconess Hospital. She currently serves on the Jewish Hospital-Mercy Health Partners Medical Executive Committee and is a member of the Jewish Hospital-Mercy Health Partners Total Joint Committee.
Honors include being invited to the White House by President Clinton for her work with the Women’s Sports Foundation. Dr Andrews has been recognized by her peers to be a “TOP DOCTOR” in Cincinnati for many years, most recently in 2012 and has been named as one of the “Best Medical Specialists” Orthopaedic Surgery – Sports Medicine in Cincinnati. Dr Andrews has also been selected as one of the Best Doctors in America in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Best Doctors in America is a peer review of 45,000 of the best doctors in the United States. In 2012, Dr Andrews was selected by Becker’s Orthopedic, Spine & Pain Management Review as one of the “125 Outstanding Knee Surgeons” in America. All surgeons included on the list were trained at top medical schools and completed knee and sports medicine fellowships at world-renowned institutions. Dr Andrews has added qualifications from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Subspecialty Certificate in Sports Medicine in 2010. She has maintained Board Certification in Orthopaedic Surgery since 1994.
Dr Andrews was named Honorary Chair Cincinnati Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run in 2010 and was the Top Individual Fundraiser. Dr Andrews is actively involved in patient education and has given many community lectures in Cincinnati. Her areas of interest include knee and shoulder problems, in particular arthroscopic surgery, ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, rotator cuff surgery and total knee replacement surgery
