Timothy Heckmann is a licensed physical therapist and certified athletic trainer specializing in orthopaedic and sports physical therapy. In 1981, Tim joined the newly created Cincinnati SportsMedicine and Orthopaedic Center where his primary responsibilities included patient care, education, and community outreach. During his early tenure, the Center established educational programs in sports medicine for high school coaches. These seminars eventually became a state requirement for holding a coaching license in Ohio. Tim became a mentor for physical therapy and athletic training students from multiple universities across the country.
Tim was employed by Cincinnati SportsMedicine until 1997 when the physical therapy division was acquired by Healthsouth. Tim became an Administrator for the Cincinnati market where his primary responsibilities included patient care, education, community outreach, and research. He was employed by Healthsouth until 2004, at which time he was asked to return to Cincinnati SportsMedicine as a co-director of rehabilitation.
Over the years, Tim developed an interest and expertise in the treatment and rehabilitation of complex knee and shoulder injuries, gait abnormalities, bracing, and orthotics. Tim has lectured at the state and national professional meetings of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association, the National Athletic Trainers Association, and the American Physical Therapy Association. He presented courses on the knee and shoulder as part of Northeast Seminars, a national educational seminar company. While working with Healthsouth, he was a member of the “knee” team, presenting weekend courses to other Healthsouth clinicians.
Tim is co-director with Dr. Frank Noyes for the sports medicine symposium, “Advances on the Knee and Shoulder” held in Hilton Head Island, SC. In addition to these educational pursuits, Tim has also been involved with the Center’s research staff on projects related to knee rehabilitation and treatment, bracing options for the knee, and has authored/ co-authored several book chapters related to multiple topics of the knee and shoulder joints. Most recently he was co-author on a number of chapters in the text book, “Noyes Knee Disorders”, devoted to rehabilitation concepts and complex knee injuries and surgeries.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Tim has enjoyed participating in the community outreach program of the Center. He served the Maderia High School athletic program for one year before becoming the medical consultant to William Henry Harrison High School athletic program for 20 years. He worked primarily with football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, and track/ cross country. He has also served as a medical consultant to the Oak Hills High School Dance Team.
Tim has served as a medical consultant to the United States Youth Soccer Association and traveled with their Olympic Development Program to Germany, Austria, Holland, and Italy. During the mid-1980’s, he was involved in the testing and training of the National and Olympic Men’s Soccer teams during their exhibition trips to Cincinnati. Tim also served as a medical volunteer to the 1987 Pan American Games held in Indianapolis, IN.
Tim has been involved in many community organizations and activities. He is a member of Philippus United Church of Christ and has previously served on their Church Board as an Elder and Vice President. He is currently chairperson for the Stewardship Campaign. Tim is a past member of the Downtown Cincinnati Exchange Club. He has also been a member of the Oak Hills High School PTA, a board member of the Athletic Boosters, and a member of the Dance Team Organization.
In his spare time Tim enjoys spending time with his family. His wife is a special education teacher, his son a chef and his daughter a marketing executive. Tim has also become an accomplished wine maker, enjoying the fruits of his labor.
Tim is currently licensed to practice in Ohio and Kentucky.
